Day 190: the continuation

Still working with old ideas, I'm adding in some new elements from saturdays 12 in 12 hours.

Conversation 1:

Note how long we kept that long teal line.
It's a pretty good dialogue, though the last 4 drawings seem to be a series of "wait, what did you say?"

This one is my favorite conversation! I love how circular it is too, with the final drawing having a very similar composition and color to the first.


Conversation 3:
The final work in this is also in another conversation, it is a "wait these two ideas meet here" moment. It's exciting because I got to explore my shrines idea more thoroughly and from a different direction.

I loved this dialogue idea, we're definitely going to do this again!

Day 186: Call and Response 12 in 12 Hours

Annie and I are trying something exciting with this 12 in 12 hour installation. We are doing a call and response. Each hour, we'll trade artworks and make ours in response to the others. By the end we'll have two conversations.

Day 185: A whale of a time

I finished yesterday's collage, these are all 18" x 24". I'm thinking of maybe working on a larger one, then I can use a wider varity of marks with the embroidery thread.



Other excitement, tomorrow I'll be doing my 12 in 12 hours with Annie Blazejack. It's going to be great fun, and I'll try to post as I go, so you all can check in on my progress.

Day 184: progress in progress

I'm still exploring these whale skeleton shrines, I think I'm really starting to get somewhere. Here's what I've made so far today. It still needs some embroidery thread, but that will have to wait till tomorrow.

Day 183: Time Flies

Wow, time really went by today! I fell like I started a drawing wednesday morning and then woke up at 1:30 am to find in done.
I guess time flies when you're making art.

Day 182: Swept Off My Feet

Visiting the MOMA in NYC is a lot like visiting old friends. Old friends who you like a lot, and who happen to be throwing a party, and have invited all the coolest people they know. Aside from some old favorites, The Demoiselles d'Avignon, Starry Night, La Danse, That Picasso with the naked boy leading a horse... there were some new favorites too. I felt like every time a turned my head I was left breathless by another glorious work of art.

Among them was this beautiful Gauguin painting of puppies.


A HUGE Monet waterlilies painting that was absolutely mesmerizing

An Exhibit on Tim Burton, wow that man's brain is an enigma!


A beautiful little Klimt that got me thinking about patterns and backgrounds

Other highlights include a floor full of photographs, Avadon, Calahan, Robert Frank, Cindy Sherman etc...
And a retrospective of this CRAZY performance artist named Marina Abramovic, who may have been a masochist, but is also incredibly badass.

Another inspiring highlight of my visit to New York was a studio visit with Georgia Elrod (a friend I haven't seen sine I was 8). She is doing some very incredible work (http://www.georgiaelrod.com/), and has much good inspiring and insightful advice.


If you have an opportunity to go to MOMA make sure to, it is definitely worth going out of your way to see. Also check out Georgia's work.

Day 180: Artist of the day

Today I went to the Newman Popiashvili gallery, and met with Irena Popiashvili to talk about my art. She had some good insights for me, and suggested I look at the work of artist Berend Strik.

He works from photographs and found images, adding to them with fabric and stitching.

Day 177: Inspiring day

I went to the Armory show. So many stunning photographs, it was really inspiring. BONUS: My dad's pictures were on display, you can check out his work at www.randallevenson.com

New York is so inspiring, there are so many creative people! I love it!

Day 175: Planning a Painting

A while ago I started a painting of a siren, due to shoulder troubles, I'm exploring smaller work right now, but I've started doing sketches for backgrounds for the painting. I'm headed to NYC tomorrow, my father is going to be in a photography show! Check out www.randallevenson.com
