Officially A New York Artist!

I spent the past week or so moving from Providence to NYC. And I set up my studio today! It was a great process because I got to go through all the art I made in the past year and spend some time thinking about it. Also I get to have a studio space and make art all the time again.

My studio is in room with 3 other studios
But it's the one with all the windows.
it's 150sq ft total
and I'm so happy to have it.

The other cool thing about this studio is it exists in a building that is a larger community of artists. You can check it out here http://www.brooklynartstudiosnyc.blogspot.com/

Day 326: A Reminder

It is some ungodly hour, and I find myself unable to fall asleep. Such is the consequence of taking a vacation from my art making. After about a week, I find myself lying in bed planning paintings until the morning arrives all too soon.

It's nice to be suddenly filled with inspiration and ideas, but being tired all the time is a slight drawback. Thankfully, a week from today Annie and I are doing another 12 in 12 hours, so I just have to make it until then.

In the mean time, I'm teaching a drawing class at the Rhine Art Center in Lakeside Ohio. I ask my students to fill a 70 sheet sketchbook in our 5 day course. It's a decent amount of drawing so I also do the assignment, in solidarity. I haven't done much in my sketchbook this year since I've been using the monthly 12 in 12's to a similar end. It's nice to return to that format, plus it's been good practice drawing from life.

Day 316: Actually Day 314

I've been traveling and without internet, but now that I am safely in Lakeside Ohio I'm going to post Wednesday's developments.

In step one, I taped all the fish I cut out to the canvas.

Then I painted over the area:

And finally I took off the fish cutouts, revealing the underlying paint layers in contrast to the newest one.

The painting is not quite finished, but now it gets to dry for two and a half weeks while I teach art classes here in Lakeside.

Days 312 & 313

Yesterday the paint was finally dry enough to rework the paintings from last week a little. I leave for a two week vacation to Ohio on thursday, so my goal is to finish these two paintings by then. The main issue is waiting for paint to dry.

This one is almost done.

For this one, I want to make it slightly more ocean/ tent like.
I spent all day today cutting out these little fish, I'm going to tape them over the current fish swarm and paint a dark glaze over everything. Then when I remove them there will be well defined fish as a fish swarm instead of the current chaos. Hopefully it's dry enough to do this tomorrow.
