Day 306: waiting for paint to dry

I reworked yesterday's ocean tent painting. Mostly, I lightened it up a little, but I also added more sections to make it more tent-like. I am planning to rework it a little, specifically the new tent portions, but the paint has to dry a bit first.

I also started another ocean tent painting, though I'm not sure just yet how to resolve it
In other exciting news, tomorrow is another 12 in 12 with Annie!

Day 305: More paintings

I took a better picture of the painting I finished Friday night:

And I started a new painting. I feel like the ocean tent series and these birds on a wire are somehow part of the same series. They have a similar aesthetic and mood, so I decided to revisit the ocean tents with my oil paints. By lunch I had something that looked like this.
Though I kind of liked it that way, I wanted to keep going, and by the end of today:

There are some things I'm planning to develop and clarify in this painting, but I've got to give it a little time to dry. Oil painting teaches patience.

Day 302: Mess Making

I forget how messy painting with oil paints can be. Because they never dry, they get everywhere, and then spread like glitter. If a little gets on my brush, soon my whole hand is covered. All the same, I'm liking it more than acrylic right now. It's so fun to paint with.

I've gotten to a good pausing point with yesterday's oil painting. Now I just have to wait for it to dry before I can put on the finishing touches. Please excuse the major glare going on in this picture, it should photograph better once it's dry.

Day 301: A Prolific Day

Here's the progress I made on yesterday's canvas. I used gold leaf for the first time (you can see it at the borders of the bird silhouette) and it's pretty amazing. I also got out my oil paints for this one. They are so much fun, I love the way the go onto the canvas, and I ended up painting till midnight or so.

I also started gessoing over some old canvases, and turned them into new art.

Here are two birds, mirrors of each other, in full color.

I've been trying to figure out how these invisible birds on a wire fit in with my oil bird series, and here is something I came up with. I cut out an Ibis silhouette and gessoed around it on an old oil-bird painting. I like the look, though the painting is missing something. I think I'll add some more black.

Day 300: That's almost a year

It is my 300th day as an official artist! The progress of the day is that I painted a painting, didn't like it, gessoed over it and started a new painting. I've got an exciting new idea for these bird paintings that involves gold leaf (something I've never used before). I'm also going to do this one in oil paint, which I haven't used in a while. I think it will help add texture. Of course it will take much longer to paint them, having to wait for all the layers to dry and so on.

Day 296: Birthday Fun

I am in New York celebrating the second birthday of a very important person. The crown is a personal creation.

Birds on a Wire Recap

A quick look at my newest evolution in painting

Day 294: Minus The Shoes

I finished yesterdays painting. All the smaller blue birds in the sky are cut out from silk and adhered to the canvas.
I painted over the pair of shoes hanging on the upper left powerline. I'm excited by all these paintings.

Day 293: In Progress

I'm experimenting with the idea of shoes on a wire.

I started a new painting and added the shoes in. It's still in progress, check in for the finished version tomorrow.

Day 292: Another Painting

In the words of the great Hero Levenson, "I did it!"

Here's another painting for your viewing pleasure.

The flying bird is cut out from one of my treasured fabrics and attached to the painting.

Day 291: Still Exploring

I'm still working with these birds and wires, here is a painting I started Friday. Hopefully I'll have it finished tomorrow.

Day 287: Painting Accomplished!

I finished the painting, and am pretty psyched. It definitely reminds me of my ocean tent paintings now. I'm going to keep exploring this new direction.

Day 286: In Progress

Today I started a painting, still exploring power lines and bird silhouettes. There is something about this motif that reminds me of the ocean tents I was making, so I'm hoping to explore that some more. To give you an idea of the day's progress, first I drew the power lines on the canvas in ink.

Then I cut out bird shapes and taped them to the canvas. By painting a color over them, when I remove the paper birds, their silhouettes will remain. I'm planning on finishing the painting tomorrow!

Day 285: Power Lines

I am back from a long weekend in Vermont. I have returned to internet access and my art supplies with vigor, though I will miss long swims in a cold lake on a hot day.

Working off some ideas from the last 12 in 12 hours with Annie, I've been practicing my power lines. Here are 4 new drawings made today.
